Writer Aleks Bukarski published his first book “People whose parachute doesn’t open”, free of charge on the internet in digital form (pdf) under the Creative Commons license.

By doing this, the author who is popular among the urban youth wants to encourage all the artists regardless of age or artistic discipline to “bestow” their own works under the Creative Commons license, in order to make the cyber-space a real alternative for the development of the modern Macedonian culture

“This act of mine is as noble as much as it is protesting. It is noble because I am making my artistic work available for free to the wider public. Protesting - because of the unbearable conditions imposed by the publishers in Macedonia – the behavior towards the young authors and the enormous omissions in the promotion and distribution”, stated Bukarski. By publishing his book on the internet, he is also raising the issue about why “reputable publishing houses of the 21st century” only distribute books in Skopje, neglecting the remaining cities throughout the country, and fail to provide the opportunity for online credit card shopping on their websites.

“People whose parachute doesn’t open” won the first prize at the competition for best debut prose work “Novite!”, organized by the “Templum” publishing house. The hard copy version of the book published in December 2006 is still at sale, although the circulation of the first edition is almost sold out.

The Creative Commons copyright protection system is enabling a framework for publishing works on the internet for authors who are willing to share digital versions of their works. By using the licenses, they are clearly defining the conditions under which their work can be used; for instance, for non-commercial purposes only. In the case of violation of the conditions selected by the authors, they have the right to apply all legal measures for protection from piracy or plagiarism.

Many world famous artists are using Creative Commons for sharing and promoting their works, from writers like Cory Doctorow, film authors such as Wiley Wiggins, to music stars like “Pearl Jam”, “Beastie Boys” and David Byrne.

With the National Strategy on Information Society Development in 2005, it was established that the chronic lack of contents in the local languages on the internet is one of the factors hindering the development of this technology in Macedonia.
