Teenagers surfing the internet are most exposed to personal data abuse.
On the occasion of the European Data Protection Day, the Directorate
for personal data protection organized an open day for the citizens in
order to familiarize them with its work and their right to privacy
protection. High school students, who according to the director
Marijana Marushic are most frequently exposed to personal data abuse on
the internet, visited the Directorate for personal data protection
Monday. The Directorate will also promote the brochure “You decide” for
this target group.
“The goal is to raise the awareness of the citizens about their rights
to personal data protection so that they could react if these rights
have been violated”, Marushic said.
Last year, more than 40 petitions were submitted by the citizens to the
Directorate, but no fines were issued since this was a period during
which the Directorate was informing the institutions about their legal
obligations. The analyses indicated that the violations are not done
deliberately, but mostly due to ignorance of the Law.
According to Marushic, the authorizations of the Directorate will be
expanded with the amendments of the Law on personal data protection,
which are currently in parliamentary procedure.
“With these law amendments, an inspection supervision and infringement
commission will be introduced. Instead of the courts, the commission
will now have the authority to decide whether fines should be issued
for unauthorized revealing of personal data” stressed Marushic.
