Recently, the archive of works of Macedonian authors was enriched by the translations of the plays of William Shakespeare done by the Macedonian professor, translator and writer Dragi Mihajlovski. dragi_mihajlovskiIn his endeavor to make his work accessible to as wide a public as possible, i.e. to everyone that “cannot always afford to buy a book”, and to the people “who are not living in Macedonia”, Dragi Mihajlovski is pleased to be able to contribute even more in the spreading of the Macedonian literature and culture in general. 

Out of the thirty-seven plays believed to be written by Shakespeare, thirty have been translated into Macedonian up to now and published in print editions. Dragi Mihajlovski has translated fifteen of these works, most of which will be published in electronic form under the Creative Commons license. 

The works “Coriolanus” and “All’s Well That Ends Well” are some of the first translated plays of William Shakespeare into Macedonian by Dragi Mihajlovski, that are now available for download on the internet in electronic form. Every interested reader can visit the appropriate category at this portal and download the works. This is only the beginning of the phase of publishing the works. The remaining plays are currently in the process of digitalization and will be gradually published in the upcoming period. Furthermore, the readers’ public will have the opportunity to download works of this author. 

It is important to emphasize that the readers can download the works free of charge, read them and share them with other interested readers under the condition that they attribute the author of the work, do not use the work for commercial purposes and do not alter it. These are actually the Creative Commons licensing conditions under which Mihajlovski licensed his works on the internet. 

Namely, Mihajlovski has been working in the Faculty of Philology “Blazhe Koneski” in Skopje since 1976, initially as a librarian of the Department of English language and literature following his magistracy as an assistant for the subjects English literature and theory and practice of translation, whereas following his doctorate in 1999 he was the first to get a doctor’s degree in the area of theory and practice of translation in the Republic of Macedonia. Up to now, he has published five collections of short stories, three novels, two books for children and two books of studies and essays for which he has received the highest literary prize in our country - “Stale Popov” in 2003 and 2007, for the novels “The death of the savage” and “My Skenderbey” and he has also won the Honorary Racin’s acknowledgement in 1994 for the collection of short stories “Pole jump”.

He has translated more than 70.000 verses from English into Macedonian and vice versa, as well as many novels, stories and plays from English into Macedonian and vice versa. He has also translated 15 plays and 154 sonnets of Shakespeare, Milton’s “Paradise Lost” epic, and many other works. Dr. Dragi Mihajlovski is also an eminent member of the Writers’ Association of Macedonia, of the Macedonian P.E.N. Centre and the Association of writers for peace in Washington, USA.
