Researchers at CERN, the particle physics laboratory that helped create the Internet, have been working on a new superfast Internet infrastructure that they expect to be as much as 10 000 times as fast as the current Internet.

Researchers at CERN say that the new Grid infrastructure will allow users to download entire feature films within seconds. At speeds about 10 000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, the Grid will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

Unlike the current Internet, which is a mish-mash of technologies held together with old cables, the new Grid is being built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the data. To date there are already 55 000 servers installed.
