The representatives of “Deutsche Telekom” arrived in Skopje for a
meeting with the Committee on Competition Protection, which should
decide whether the deal with Greek “OTE” is to give DT a dominant
position in the telecommunications market in the country.
“This was only a briefing for providing preliminary information on the procedure which should soon be initiated”, stated Tatjana Popovska, legal representative of Deutsche Telekom.
The competent bodies will be on standby until the deal is finalized, and they can begin with the analyses afterwards.
We have informed them about their rights and obligations arising from the Law on Competition Protection, which means that they should be submitting a notification as soon as possible, at least this was their intention, after which we could undertake certain activities”, said Chedomir Kralevski from the Committee on Competition Protection.
Although monopoly is still present in the fixed telephony, Macedonia is about to get a new one in the mobile telephony. Last week, “Deutsche Telekom” reached the agreement for entering the Greek “OTE”.
The Germans will pay approximately 3.2 billion euros for 25 percent of OTE’s capital and management of the Greek mobile operator.
As a result, the German “Deutsche Telekom” in Macedonia will own the fixed telephony operator “Macedonian Telecom” as well as the two most powerful mobile operators “T-Mobile” and “Cosmofon”, which are together holding 90 percent of the country’s market. This will make “VIP” their only competitor.
It is stated in the Law on competition protection that monopoly could occur if a certain entity controls more than 40 percent of the services and clients, but in order to determine whether monopoly is present, additional criteria should be examined.
