7.07.2008. |
The first conference within the frames of the COMMUNIA project was held
on June 30 and July 1 in the campus of Louvaine-La-Neuve University.
The main conference topic was the assessment of the economic and
societal impacts on Europe’s digital public domain.
About 100 people attended the conference, some of which had the role of lecturers and presenters from various European organizations, institutions and universities. Two members of the Metamorphosis Foundation participated at the conference. Metamorphosis is a member of the COMMUNIA thematic network since its very beginning. The sessions started at 9 a.m. on the first day, and there were discussions about the economic and social influence on the public domain, the problems encountered when assessing the creative and scientific common contents, the digitalization of music and literature works etc. Parallel sessions on various topics were held twice a day, and the participants were able to group according to their interests. In the first phase, the topics of the parallel sessions were digital libraries and scientific information, whereas the second session divided the participants to panels on public sector information and creative works.
The regular sessions continued during the second day. The copyright policy for digital libraries was discussed in context of the i2010 initiative, as well as the use of free and open source software in the public sector, etc.
The conference was finalized with the general assembly of the COMMUNIA members. Among the other questions that were discussed at this meeting, a decision for the next COMMUNIA event location was also made. It was scheduled for October this year, and is to be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
