Research and analysis company Gartner claims that despite the great interest in free and OSS software there are few purchasers of OS Linux and OSS for office use. Research conducted during the Gartner symposium which results were published in the last quarter of 2004 shows that only 1% of enterprises use OS Linux. Gartner expects that by 2008 only 3.2% of the enterprises are going to use OS Linux since the costs for migration from OS Windows to OS Linux are just too high for the enterprises.

Another research conducted by Evans Data Corporation shows that the number of developers in EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) using PHP, Perl and Python for development showed double digit drop-off last year. The number of developers using PHP for development dropped by more than 25% in the last year and the number of developers indicating they would not evaluate or use PHP for future development projects grew by almost 40% in the same time period. Perl usage in EMEA has dropped by more than 20%, while Python usage also has dropped by 25%.

According to John Andrews, Evans Data’s Chief Operating Officer, PHP, Perl and Python use on a global basis peaked two years ago and has started to decline. This decline is more exaggerated in EMEA and APAC than in North America. He thinks that one of the key factors to this loss of developer mindshare has been the inability of these languages to penetrate the enterprise space.
