On October 6, 2005 for the first time Macedonia was left without internet connection for five hours. Telecom’s network was attacked at 11 o’clock probably by hackers that have successfully routed huge traffic towards Telecom’s network and have blocked the complete internet network in Macedonia to 16 o’clock. It could not have been confirmed whether the attack was performed by revolted users of the expensive internet provided by Telecom or organised by Telecom’s competitors. Makedonski Telekomunikacii confirmed that the attack was organised and planed coming from abroad caused by the internet situation in Macedonia. Yet, they have not excluded the possibility initiators to be their users.
“Some malicious people apart from misleading decent ADSL users proving them wrong information about the service, launched organised attack on data network system (DNS) in order to block internet network in Macedonia,” said form Makedonski Telekomunikacii, and added that the network was re-established with the help of Magyar Telekom (former Matav) and Deutsche Telecom. Makedonski Telekomunikacii refer to the attack not just like the attack on telecom, but like an attack on the Macedonian economy. The criminal behaviour was immediately reported to local and international institutions for prosecuting people responsible for the attack.
