Unknown foreign government, company, state or nongovernmental organisation has stolen us the "macedonia.eu” domain. Neither the Government nor the Macedonian companies reacted on the EC decision to introduce “.eu” top-level domain.

On December 7th, EC announced the Sunrise period allowing businesses, public bodies and citizens of the EU member-states to register address under the “.eu” top-level domain. Over 100.000 requests were submitted in the first hours after the registration was open.

It is possible the application for registration of “macedonia.eu” to have been submitted by Macedonian company that has registered subdivision in an EU member-state or company of a Macedonian living abroad. Yet, it is even more possible that a Greek state institution or company asked EURid, European Registry of Internet Domain Names, to block applications for registering “macedonia.eu” arguing that Macedonia is Greek territory.

Neither Macedonian Government nor any of Macedonian companies will have the right to register domain under the “.eu” top-level domain with the name of our country in English. Vreme published several articles on Greek propaganda on the internet that denies Macedonian history and Macedonian constitutional name. If one checks the EURid website, one can see that “republic of macedonia.eu“, „fyrom.eu“ and „makedonija.eu” are still available. Nevertheless, apart from some NGOs and physical entities, not a single state institution has shown interest to promote or to protect our constitutional name on the internet, medium without which a products originating from Macedonia and the brand “made in Macedonia” cannot be protected.

From February 7th to March 7th, 2006 EC will announce another sunrise period that will expand the list of state and private organisations that can register websites under the “.eu” top-level domain. After this period, all legal and physical entities will be allowed to access this domain.

Metamorphosis: It is not the same who will own the domain names

Filip Stojanovski, programme coordinator in Metamorphosis, foundation for ICT promotion, thinks that “.eu” top-level domain is important for preserving the brand Macedonia.  

“Introducing the “.eu” top-level domain opens range of opportunities for creating image and branding. This is very important for the businesses, and for the state and nongovernmental organisations. Experts in Europe think that although many companies and organisations already have a domain name, they are buying “.eu” domain in order to prevent somebody else to misuse their name. This clearly indicates that the company is registered in Europe," said Stojanovski.
 
He informed that although Macedonia is not yet an EU member-state, Foundation Metamorphosis has already tried to register “metamorphosis.eu” domain by using mediators. The main reason for such prompt reaction is the fact that there are many companies in the EU, especially in Greece, that are using the name Metamorphosis.
