About 10 Macedonians living in Sweden, Germany and USA requested registration of “macedonia.eu” internet address since the European Commission launched “.eu” top-level domain as official EU domain on December 2005. Slave Saveski and Boris Andonovski are Macedonian immigrants in Sweden that informed us that together with ten other Macedonians living in other European countries they have started the procedure for registration of “macedonia.eu” address.

Most of them started the procedure for registering “greece.eu” address in order to obtain this address and to worry Greek organisations and individuals that are denying our constitutional name and history on the Internet.

“The same day when “.eu” top-level domain was launched, I received an e-mail message from a friend of mine living in USA and owning the “vmacedonia.com” address. He said: “Slave, get it immediately, to be ours, Macedonian.” I did that and apart from "macedonia.eu" I have also applied for “makedonija.eu” and for “grece.eu”,” said Saveski in his letter to Vreme.

Boris Andonovski who has been living in Sweden for three years said that he requested to register “greece.eu” domain since he was irritated by the hostile Greek propaganda on the internet.

“Most of the web addresses registered with the name Macedonia are owned by organisations or individuals from Greece. They publish contents that deny our existence and because of that I applied for the “greece.eu” address. If EURid grants me the address I will publish content about Macedonia in Macedonian,” said Andonovski.

Vreme has already informed that on December 7th, European Commission announced the Sunrise period allowing businesses, public bodies and citizens of the EU member-states to register address under the “.eu” top-level domain. Four months before the Sunrise period was announced, EC allowed EU member-states to reserve a number of internet address under the “.eu” top-level domain with the names that are geographically or geo-politically significant for their country and that can have big influence on their political and territorial oganisation. Greece is among 6 EU member-states that used this opportunity and reserved the names „macedonia.eu“, „makedonia.eu“, „makedonidos.eu“ and several other names containing the name of our country. According to the rules for using “.eu” domain it is very unlikely that the commission that considers the applications will grant the “macedonia.eu” and “greece.eu" names to our emigrants. Nevertheless, at the EURid website is stated that a commission consisted of several experts from the European countries will have the last word in the eventual dispute over the right of address registration under the specific geographical name.
