Neither the Government, nor any other state institution, nor the big Macedonian businessmen did not react on the EC decision for launching “.eu” top-level domain. Even if they did react, maybe that would not stopped Greece to acquire the “macedonia.eu” address, but the fact is that they did not even try to do something. It would be rude to say that our ministers, prime minister, presidents of the committees for information technology, supporters of information society, have never heard about the internet and the great potential that the net provides. Every day they claim that they are doing everything to promote the brand-name Macedonia, the name Macedonia.

However, their passiveness shows how short-sighted they are. They do not care that tomorrow some other country will produce meat, fruit, vegetable, notebooks, pencils, clothes and much, much more stating that it comes from Macedonia. Regardless it sounds like complete nonsense and regardless the other mechanisms for protecting origin, we should have understood that on the internet nobody asks whether the content he is reading is true, but he is simply reading the content.

I was surprised that our emigrants reacted on the EC decision. I do not know whether you remember, but they are the people that we often laugh at their five-dollar love for the country in our informal talks. The fact that some of them reacted and aggressively tried to register the name Macedonia under the “.eu” top-level domain was also a surprise. They were offended when they read that the Greece reserved the address and sent evidences that they asked EURid to grant this address. Once again, Europe proved its stinginess and gave the right to its daughters to reserve the names they think they belong to them.

Nevertheless, when Macedonia will finally enter the European Union, and that will happen sooner or later, Macedonia will need to lead another fight to prove that the name Macedonia on the internet should be connected with the state Macedonia. The problem is that when it comes to the internet, the negotiations, with mediators, are very rare case. The rule on the internet is: first come, first served. End of the story.
