UN will establish a body called Internet Governance Forum (IGF) that will debate the internet’s most pressing problems. Although its decisions will not be obligatory, the IGF is expected to have great influence on national internet policies.
The Forum is result of the discussions over the internet governance. In a way it is a first step towards weakening the US influence over the net. Currently, the internet is governed by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers which is over direct governance of US Department of Commerce.
The decision for establishing of the IGF was reached during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Tunisia in November 2005. Consultation meeting on the IGF’s functions and priorities is scheduled to take place in Geneva on 16-17 February. Greece has offered to host the first meeting of the IGF which is scheduled to take place by the end of June 2006.
UN is inviting all interested entities to participate in the consultation meeting in Geneva. They should fill in an application form and return it no later than 11 February. Participants who represent governments and entities which are accredited to the WSIS or Economic and Social Council of the UN are admitted to attend the meeting.
