“I will go to Serbia and India to look for IT experts since I cannot find any in Macedonia,” react several Macedonian companies that have been looking for computer programmers more than a year.

They have been looking for IT experts at the faculties, announcements and agencies. At the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Electrotechnical Faculty they have been informed that simply there are no IT experts and engineers since they had found jobs even before graduation. Not a single applicant responded to the two-year announcement for IT expert of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

“Why should one apply and work for 200 euros when IT experts instantly find jobs with 1.000 euros salaries,” comment professors at the University in Skopje.

Skopje-based company Seavus needs 100 IT experts and engineers and they can employ 20 immediately. Despite of the favorable offer, Seavus cannot find suitable applicants.

“We were looking everywhere and with the help of everybody. We cannot find IT experts. Now I will go to Serbia and Montenegro, and than to China and India to look for IT experts,” said Metodija Pejovski, consultant at Seavus.

He said that the demand for IT experts on Macedonian market is much bigger that the supply and currently there is a shortage of 200 IT experts and engineers.

“We have warned that this is going to happen, but nobody listens. Now we are negotiating with the faculty in Nish to hire their IT experts. If a greater attention is paid to this profession, the crises may last only for one more year and the things will be settled,” said Pejovski.

Ljupcho Sharkovski, Ein Soft’s general manager shares the same views. His company has been looking for IT experts by announcing in newspapers and agencies, and very rarely someone responded to the vacancy announcements on the corporate website.

“I can say that there are no unemployed people in our area of work. This means that the state has no strategy for creating new jobs and immediately employing new people. While thousands lawyers and philosophers are sitting at home and without employment, there is a huge shortage of OT staff. Therefore, a program should be prepared that will provide scholarships for the students, and the country will have benefit from that,” said Sharkovski.

Marjan Gushev, professor at the Faculty of Informatics, said that not many students interested in studying informatics are enrolled at the faculties.

“Ministry of education is just rewriting the quotas without considering the need of the students,” added Gushev.

Zoran Velkovski, pro-rector for studies at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University said that there are students that want to study informatics, but the quota and the capacity of faculties are small.

“The problem can be resolved easily. The state should prepare strategy and to predict that we need 5.000 IT experts in the following 5 years. But the state should financially support them,” said Velkovski.

Every year 120 students are enrolled in the Institute of Informatics in Skopje and 30 in Bitola.
