Civil society organisations blame the Government that deliberately delays the Telecom’s monopoly on the account of 600.000 users. EU clearly stated that if we want to become part of the European family, we must eliminate the monopoly in the fixed telephony.

“The citizens should benefit from the liberalisation, with lower prices and more services. With the laws they have adopted, the Government and the Parliament work against the interests of 600.000 users of Telecom’s services. The state does not create conditions for competition in the fixed telephony. MakTel makes enormous profit considering the overall situation of Macedonian economy. Because of the high prices the citizens are scared to pick up the phone, and the Government does not want to eliminate the monopoly because of the dividend it receives from MakTel,” said Janko Stojkoski, civic action ‘Resist-say no’.

It has been announced that in the first period of March, MakTel will sign commercial agreement with a telecommunication company. However, this will not be true competition since the company will not sign interconnection agreement and will offer cheaper international calls via internet. Future fixed operators are not satisfied form the interconnection prices and demand decrease of the prices arguing that they will not be competitive to MakTel.

The opposition party VMRO DPMNE submitted materials, documents and information about certain irregularities and corruption in defining interconnection price from the Agency for electronic communications.

“The public was informed that the interconnection price offered by MakTel is decreased for a certain percent. Simple calculation shows that promoting new provisions in the tariff result in final price which is far over the previous, said Gordana Jankulovska, VMRO DPMNE secretary general.

Jankulovska and Zoran Trajchevki, president of the VMRO DPMNE’s telecommunication commission noted that failing to implement the Law on electronic communications is the base for corruption.

There is no competition in the foxed telephony despite the fact that the telecommunications market had been liberalized since January 1st, 2005.
