Macedonian will be able to make cheaper international calls compared with the calls offered by Makedonski Telekomunikacii. Nextel signed agreement with MakTel for using fixed network, meeting all legal requirements for offering international calls via internet. One minute international call via Nextel to USA, Canada, Australia and EU will cost 6 to 8 denars while MakTel charges 19 denars. Users can use the service with pre-paid cards of 250, 750 and 1.500 denars and by dialling the free number 0 800 90 800.

However, launching the Nextel service cannot be considered to be true competition to MakTel since the company will not have its own subscribers, own network and will not offer national traffic. Several other companies have been worked until recently, when they were closed down in order to meet the requirements of Lan on electro0nic communications. MakTel announced that 13 requests for access to the fixed network have been submitted by different companies to them and all of these have received a positive response from the fixed operator.

Marijan Grijakovikj – Gjurovski, director of Nextel, said that it is still early to talk about national calls service, mostly because of the high interconnection prices that do not allow them to be competitive on the market. In the past few months Nextel reacted to the EU and international institutions accusing Government and Agency for electronic communications that they do not liberalise the telecommunications market but they protect the monopoly interests and obstruct the work of the competition.

“This is just the beginning of the implementation of the company’s strategy, that predicts interconnection with the current operators and active role in the internet services market. This encompasses open and regulated telecommunication market where the rules are applicable for everybody,” said the Nextel’s director.

MakTels executive, Attila Szendrei, assessed the agreement with Nextel as historical moment that allows the long-expected competition in the fixed telephony.

“We have double benefit from the agreement. We have proved EU that there is a liberalisation of the Macedonian telecommunication market and that we provide advantages for the users,” said Szendrei.
