In the realms of the action for preventing piracy launched a month ago about one million blank CDs are detained because they did not have a declaration. Market inspection claims that they have cleaned the markets from the pirated music and movie CDs because they do not permit import of CDs without stating the company and address of importer and exporter.

“Action was launched on February 24 with the Government’s decision. Before the decision Market inspection, Ministry of Interior and Customs analysed the situation. Now, each blank CD that is to be imported must have declaration. When the inspector finds pirated CD with importer stated on it, the importer will tell the buyer and we will discover the person that performed the piracy. This is why there is a resistance to stating importer on each CD. Until now, those caught with pirated CDs were reported to the courts but that did not help in eliminating the problem,” said Nikola Kolevski, director of Market Inspection.

Every day inspectors were controlling the most frequent places for selling pirated CDs – on the markets and on the entrances of the shopping centres, before the Stone Bridge. They claim that street sell has already been eliminated in smaller towns, while in Skopje one can come across pirated CDs accidentally. “But, when citizens report selling pirated CDs, our inspectors immediately go on the scene,” said sources from the Market Inspection.

There were numerous reactions from the importers. One of the major CDs importers has 600.000 blank CDs in his storehouse that he tried to import after the action against piracy has been launched.
“The action was not our discovery - there is the same action in Croatia and Montenegro,” said the importer for Vest. “Our Government reached a decision and started to look for declarations. They are announcing implementation of additional 3 denars per imported CD. It is true that I have a lot of CDs on stock, but I have printed declarations on some of them and I will export the rest.”

Importers of blank CDs explain that just before the action two Macedonian companies imported a lot of blank CDs and their CDs are now selling on the market. After the stocked CDs will be sell off, the importers warn that the smuggling of the blank CDs will be increased, especially from Kosovo, because the price there is lower, and with the additional fee the legally imported blank CDs will be more expensive.
