Macedonian web page of BSA (Business Software Alliance), alliance dealing with commercial software growth and protection of software copyright was launched few days ago. Aim of this web page is promotion of safe and legal digital world. More precisely, its aim is to offer information, news and data regarding software piracy and to provide support to the new technologies that should enhance distribution of copyrighted works legally.
The need is clear – software piracy is widespread and it keeps spreading with the increasing of PC and internet use. New opportunities provided by internet, unfortunately, make the software theft easier and all that presents threat both for innovations and incomes that should be provided by the internet. Therefore, Macedonian BSA, member of the World BSA (founded in 1988 with programs in 65 countries) educates PC users on software copyright and IT security, while the web page makes all that easier and available to all.
As BSA representative Valentin Pepeljugovski said, all that, the opportunity to get acquainted with the news from software copyright protection, opportunity to get acquainted with the types of software piracy and state institutions activities, offered by this web page will allow users to avoid problems with illegal software. Apart from that, the visitors can subscribe to receive information, as well as the latest articles and researches in this sphere conducted in the country and abroad, as well as to obtain anti-piracy information for all countries where BSA has programs considering the fact that the Macedonian web page is linked to all web pages for the countries where BSA has programs. BSA is the voice of the world's commercial software, hardware and internet industry, as stated at the BSA web site, and the numerous BSA members represent the fastest growing industry in the world.
“Software piracy is and becomes the world’s biggest challenge,” said Pepeljugovski. At the web page one can read that in 2004 35% of the installed software was pirated, which is 1% decrease compared to the previous year. Loses caused by piracy throughout the world were increased from 29 billion dollars to 33 billion dollars. But the situation in our country is even worst. As it has been stated at the recently CARDS-organised training in Skopje for training experts and creating infrastructure for protecting intellectual property rights, if the software piracy level in the world is 39%, then the figure is doubled in Macedonia, i.e. 72%.
“In fact, that is not new information since it is clear that Eastern Europe is a leader in software crime. If the piracy is decreased for 10%, the result would be 1.5 million new jobs in the world, or 50.000 new jobs in Eastern Europe,” reminded Pepeljugovski on the fact presented at the training.
It is clear that the situation in Macedonia is very bad in the sphere of piracy in general, and the lack of concept, lack of program and lack of coordinated joint action were identified as the reasons for such situation. Everything comes to isolated actions that cannot be fruitful since they give impression that something has been tackled from time to time.
Therefore this web page in Macedonian is very important since it provides opportunity to realise the situation and to find out the solution for people dealing with this to protect themselves and to decrease the individual damages. The web page educates the visitors that the software is protected with copyright and according to the law it can be protected both in criminal and civil legal procedure. It provides opportunity to give and receive information, to report piracy, and apart from new technologies support it also provides safety in their activities which is very important for fostering their work. Since, if you are not certain that you can protect your intellectual property that threatens its further development and investing in other countries. Safety gives huge boost especially with the promotion and attempt to provide cyber safety, safe and legal on-line world, which the users themselves can and should participate in.
