Latest study “Global Piracy 2005” performed by Business Software Alliance (BSA) shows that 70% of software used in Macedonia in 2005 was illegal estimating 9 million dollars losses in 2005 due to using pirated software.

However, there is a trend of slight decrease in using illegal software rates in Macedonia compared to 2004 when 72% of the software was pirated.

Compared to the neighbouring countries, situation in Macedonia is not so bad. Only Greece has lower piracy rate of 64%, while piracy rate in Bulgaria is 72% and in Albania 76%. In Serbia, which is analysed together with the Monte Negro in this study, piracy rate is 81% that places the country in the Top20 countries with the highest piracy rates (19th place).

Thirty-five percent of the packaged software installed on personal computers worldwide in 2005 was illegal, amounting to $34 billion in global losses due to software piracy.  However, BSA concludes that positive movement in a number of markets indicates education and enforcement efforts are paying off in emerging economies such as China, Russia and India and in Central/Eastern Europe and the Middle East & Africa. The piracy rate is highest is Vietnam and Zimbabwe with 90%, and lowest in United States with 21%, and New Zealand with 23%.
