US IT company Intel eyes on Macedonia as potential investment destination. Intel was planning to open regional computer production centre in Macedonia for producing computers that would be offered from $100 to $200, an affordable price for every household. Intel representatives have already visited Macedonia and have made contacts at the highest level. Macedonia was offered to be Intel’s partner, but, as our sources told us, the proposal has not been accepted so far, with the explanation that the timing for such investment is not very good because of the elections.
Macedonian Government does not confirm that there was a meeting with US IT company Intel. The Government formally stated that it is interested and that it supports the development of information society, denying that Intel has negotiating with any high official about opening regional information technology centre in Macedonia.
Yet, the sources that were lobbying and were the connection between Intel and the Government claim that Intel’s representatives visited Macedonia. Together with Macedonia, they have been scanning the other countries in the region. But, we found out that Inter has been very much interested in Macedonia. Macedonia has been attractive country to invest in because last year our country topped the world as wireless country with the USAID funded project “Macedonia Connects” . According to Macedonian representatives that had contacts with Intel, Macedonia would participated in the project for building regional IT centre, while Intel would provide computer licence. Computers would not be offered on the market but the Government would donate them the every household at minimal price with determined time of payment, or the computers might be free of cost.
”Macedonia can complain that does not have money. But if it wants it can allocate some of the money gained from the sold shares of Makedonski Telekomunikacii.
Citizens deserve the money they have paid for telephone access to be refunded.
The Government can prepare strategy for development of information society and to decide in the several following years to invest the money in providing computer to each family,” said Macedonian representatives that met Intel representatives, adding that apart from the licence the IT company could conduct free education for the teachers and would make donation to the schools.
