Long time spent seating in front of the computers, playing on play station, physical inactivity, inappropriate school equipment and heave school bags hunched children, experts warn

Latest reports of the regular medical checks in schools and faculties in Macedonia has shown that over 96% of the young people from 7 to 26 years of age have bad body posture and deformities of spine. Compared with the 4% to 5% average percentage of spinal deformities in the world, in Macedonia there are over 8% pupils and students with spinal deformities. In Skopje and some other Macedonian towns about 11% of the young population suffers from kifosis, i.e. swimmers’ posture.

Dr. Mimi Karovska, school medicine specialist and president of Macedonian association of school and university medicine provided there figures.

Dr. Pavlina Temelkovska, specialist at the orthopedic institution Slavej in Skopje also claims that the number of cases of spinal deformation is increasing.

She and her colleagues got the information during the visits of the medical centers in Macedonia. Spinal deformities are most common during the puberty or between 12 and 15 years of age.

”We are talking about inadequate growth of generations that can be corrected and prevented with corrective gymnastics at physical and medical education and training at home if the distortion angle is from 6 to 12 degrees.
If the distortion angle is over 12 degrees the children must wear special plastic braces,” Temelkovska explains.

Karovska says that kifosis is more common among boys from 12 to 14 years of age. Scoliosis or distortion to right or to left, is more common among girls from 11 to 13 years of age.
Many schools in Macedonia do not have sports halls and when the weather is bad the pupils stay in the classrooms.

“Pupils complain that their gym classes are replaced with other subjects. We have noticed that corrective gymnastics is more represented in secondary schools, and less in primary schools,” Karovska added.

Gym teacher at elementary school Strasho Pindzur in Negotino, Jovan Tashev, admits that they do not have conditions for trainings because the school does not have a sports hall.
“When it rains we learn theoretical parts or play some elementary games,” Tashev says.

He also noted that there are cases of spinal deformation among the pupils.

In order to improve the situation the experts recommend regular gym classes. Association demands increasing the number of gym classes from three classes a week to at least four classes a week. The classes should be entertaining, and the there should be no marks to avoid decrease of motivation among children because each child ahs specific capabilities. Doctors of school and university medicine appeal for introducing gym professor from first to fourth grade.
