On December 14, 2006 mobile phone giant Vodafone has been fined 76m euros ($100m) by a Greek privacy watchdog over a wiretapping scandal that involved the illegal monitoring of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

The Greek agency responsible for privacy said Vodafone had failed to protect its network from hackers who monitored 106 mobile accounts, including Karamanlis as well as senior military officers, human rights activists and journalists, from just before the Athens Olympic Games in August 2004 Games until March 2005.

The Watchdog also said it will question executives from Swedish telecoms group Ericsson to establish whether they had any involvement in the scandal.
