Despite the strategic partnership agreement
In the latest version of Microsoft operating system Windows Vista Macedonian language is named Macedonian from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. With half-FYROMisation of Macedonian language, Microsoft just partially corrected the injustice from the operating system Windows XP where our language was named FYRO Macedonian.
Many users think that Microsoft unscrupulously and without a consultation has rename our language and reacted on the incorrect naming of our language in the older Windows version. Macedonian IT experts also react that most of the fonts in older Windows versions use Bulgarian instead of Macedonian letters. They said that revolting fact is that previous government of Macedonia has signed strategic partnership agreement with Microsoft and the American company received about four million euros from Macedonian budget. On the occasion of signing the strategic partnership agreement between the government of the Republic of Macedonia and Microsoft in December 2003, Goran Radman, Microsoft Adriatic general manager in charge of the former Yugoslav countries, said that Microsoft will correct the old “mistake” regarding identity of Macedonia, such is presenting Macedonian language as FYRO Macedonian, and similar mistakes in previous Microsoft’s products. Signatory of the strategic partnership agreement is Radmila Shekerinska, former vice president of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and current leader of Socialdemocratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM).
Jani Makraduli, SDSM MP and one of the supporters of cooperation between the Government and Microsoft said that in the agreement our country is with its constitutional name. He added that Microsoft is an American company and is following the US foreign policy. Makraduli informed that when Windows XP and Encarta were launched in which our country and our language were marked as FYROM, Macedonian government reacted to Microsoft.
“I have not seen the Vista yet, but we have reacted to the FYROMisation when Encarta and Windows XP appeared on the market. The mistake should be corrected,” said Makraduli.
It is not clear why Microsoft is still using FYRO as attribution to Macedonian language in the latest version of Windows Vista considering the fact that USA recognized Macedonia under our constitutional name. Vreme tried to talk to Ilijancho Gagovski, director of Microsft Macedonia , about this issue, but he was not able to talk due to his business trip.
