By increasing the prices of the fixed telephony, AD Makedonski Telekomunikacii cut off the last possibility of the Macedonian citizens to have free and open communication with the developed world. Thus, they closed the window to the rest of the world. The Internet service becomes a real luxury. In a country where a quarter of the population is living in poverty, not many people will be able to afford Internet to follow the current events and achievements in the world. 

The calculations made in accordance with the new prices show that citizens that use Internet can expect twice bigger phone bills, starting from July 1st. With the new charging system, instead of 28 denars for 60 minutes connection to Internet, the users will pay the same price for only 28 minutes.

It is well known that the development of the world’s economy depends on the development of ICT (information and communication technologies), the fast transmission of information and ideas. But Macedonia is far away from that track, for a long time now. According to the European list of Internet development, Macedonia is on the bottom of the list with only 4% of Internet coverage. Albania is the only country that is in a worse position than Macedonia. In the developed world, the countries with such low Internet coverage are considered uneducated.

With the new prices of the fixed telephony we can only become a nation that is even more uneducated. The young population of Internet users will suffer the most from the new prices of the Telecom. Young people from Macedonia face a lot of difficulties to travel abroad because even if they have the money for visa they are confronted with slow and complicated procedure and are required to have a guarantee that they will return home. The education in foreign countries, the summer schools and courses are too expensive for the Macedonian standard and the experts’ literature is very seldom translated in Macedonian language.

Because of the high prices of the telephone impulse, in the past two years, the Macedonian users reduced the time spent speaking on their telephones, as well as the time spent on Internet. The people familiar with the Internet prices comment that with the new pricing policy AD Makedonski Telekomunikacii intend to impose the new internet service ADSL – fast Internet. Until now, the users are not interested in the ADSL service because it is too expensive (it takes about 4 thousand denars for joining the ADSL service and about 3 thousand denars monthly subscription). AD Makedonski Telekomunikacii believes that the telephone bills which were about 1 500 denars, will be doubled, so the families will find that the expensive ADSL service is better and cheaper solution.
